In “The
Kids Are All Right”, Annette Bening stars as Nic, a rather
fastidious doctor in a long-term relationship with the much more casual
Jules (Julianne Moore), who is sort of between careers.
She is currently considering landscaping.
Each woman carried one of their children – conceived with help
from a sperm donor – and together they are raising their
fifteen-year-old son Laser (Josh Hutcherson) and eighteen-year-old
daughter Joni (Mia Wasikowska). In
all aspects, they are a normal family, living in a middle-class Southern
California suburb - some money worries, maybe a mid-life crisis on the
horizon, one of the kids about to leave home – normal family stuff.
And when the two kids
decide they want to identify and meet their father, Nic and Jules don’t
object. Dad turns out to be
Paul (Mark Ruffalo), a good-natured restaurant owner and organic farmer
with something of a hippie past. Although
the two mothers are a little cool toward him, Paul and the kids feel an
immediate bond. Learning that
Jules has an interest in landscaping, Paul hires her to do the garden
behind his restaurant. One
thing leads to another, and soon that redefined family unit is getting
re-redefined!
Director Lisa Cholodenko’s newest film was the major hit at this
year’s Sundance Film Festival.

time 104 minutes, rated R.

John (John C. Reilly)
seems destined for awkward moments. When
his ex-wife (Catherine Keener) unexpectedly walks into his apartment to
announce that she is remarrying, she catches him in a compromising
position. Suggesting that he
might like to find a partner, she goads him into attending a party, where
he meets the very attractive Molly (Marisa Tomei).
Another awkward meeting – did the backyard shrubbery really need
watering? But Molly likes the
big lug. He seems nice enough,
and she has been a single mom for awhile, with a twenty-one-year old son
Cyrus (Jonah Hill), who lives at home and writes spaced-out dance music.
When Cyrus and John meet, Cyrus is polite and cordial, but no one
is going to steal his mother’s affections from him, and he starts a
subtle sabotage of the relationship. But
John is aware how lucky he is to have found Molly, and his counter-moves
lead to an ever-increasing war of the wills.
Filmmaking
brothers Jay and Mark Duplass have been popular at film festivals for some
time, with work like “Puffy Chair” and “Baghead”.
With “Cyrus”, they
have made their move into the big-time with a movie that Time
magazine calls “the scariest romantic comedy of the year!”
Running
time 91 minutes, rated R.

Apparently the movie
distributors have missed something in the new census numbers, and tiny
Shepherdstown somehow finds itself debuting “The
American”, George Clooney’s newest thriller, on opening week.
No one is more mystified than are we – did some of you get
counted twice?
Adapted from Martin
Booth’s 2005 novel “A Very Private Gentleman” and directed by Anton
Corbijn, the award-winning director of “Control”, “The
American” stars Clooney as Jack,
a professional assassin. Despite
his reputation of being a master of his “craft”, a recent assignment
in Sweden did not go as planned, and Jack informs his superior that his
next job will be his last. Holed
up in a small town in the Italian countryside, while a weapon he needs is
being constructed, Jack surprises himself by befriending a local priest
and attracts the romantic attentions of a local beauty.
But is he tempting fate by stepping out of his usual shadows?
Running time 105
minutes, rated R.
