“Firth gives the performance of his career!”  -  Rolling Stone

“A singularly brilliant performance by Firth – one of the year’s most satisfying films!”  -  The  Arizona Republic

“Exciting and emotionally alive – Firth deserves the Oscar!”  -  Empire

George Falconer (Colin Firth) is a college English professor in 1960s Los Angeles.  Eight months earlier, he lost Jim (Matthew Goode), his partner of sixteen years, to a fatal car accident.  Jim’s family, disapproving of their relationship, refused to let George attend the funeral.   Brokenhearted and alone, he looks for comfort with long-time friend and old flame Charlie (Julianne Moore), a British expatriate like himself.  She is still crazy about him, but George is beyond comfort and the evening goes badly.  His plan for the next day – dress impeccably, conduct himself with his usual reserve, teach his class and deliver a well-planned lecture, and then shoot himself.  But plans don’t always work out.

First-time director Tom Ford, the Texas-born fashion designer who for many years was the creative director for Gucci, co-wrote the screenplay based on the landmark short novel of the same name by Christopher Isherwood (whose story “Sally Bowles” was eventually to become the musical “Cabaret”), produced and self-financed his debut film.  Beautifully staged and photographed, “A Single Man” opened at the Venice Film Festival where Firth won the best actor award, which was followed by a Golden Globe award, the BAFTA award, and an Oscar nomination.

“Emily Blunt shines in this lush, sexy period romance!”  -   salon.com

“A sumptuous drama!”  -  The Washington Post

“Emily Blunt makes Victoria as irresistible a young woman as Dame Judi Dench made her an older one in ‘Mrs. Brown’!”  -  Roger Ebert

Queen Victoria reigned over Great Britain for nearly sixty-four years.  Our image of her is set in our minds – a severe, stern widow dressed in black with a handkerchief on her head.  In 2016, Elizabeth II will surpass this amazing mark (unless Camilla has her whacked), and while the present queen has had her stern moments, thanks to television and movies, we have all seen the young Elizabeth, a vivacious, beautiful adolescent in love with her prince, Philip.  But Victoria was once young also.  She fought her family’s desire to appoint a Regent to reign in her place, assumed the throne at the age of eighteen, and conducted a three-year correspondence by mail with Albert, the son of King Leopold of Belgium, who became the love of her life when they finally met.  Together, they had nine children.

Sarah Ferguson, the Duchess of York, has long felt that the story of the young Victoria should be told.  A brief meeting between Fergie and famed filmmaker Martin Scorsese led to a script from Oscar-winning screenwriter Julian Fellowes (“Gosford Park”).  Emily Blunt stars as the young Victoria.  Co-stars include Rupert Friend as Albert, Miranda Richardson, Jim Broadbent, nine castles, and Westminster Abbey.  Is “The Young Victoria” a gorgeous film?  Well, how about Oscar nominations for Best Costume (it won), Best Art Design, and Best Cinematography!

Running time 104 minutes, rated PG.
