George Clooney is Ryan Bingham, a self-described “termination counselor”.  He works for a company headed by the conscience-free Craig Gregory (Jason Bateman) that does the dirty work that other firms don’t have the guts or the heart to do for themselves – fire employees.  And with the economy in trouble, as Craig modestly tells his staff, “this is our moment.”  Bingham is all over the country, axing executives and entire departments, collecting their office keys as they clean out the desks.  He enjoys his life, flying 350,000 miles in a year, living out of suitcases in hotels and airports, travelling three hundred and twenty-two days on the road, except for “forty-three miserable days at home.”  His secret ambition is to be the youngest man to accumulate ten million frequent-flyer miles.  Even his casual girlfriend Alex (Vera Farmiga) fits his lifestyle – another fellow traveler, après liaison they check their laptops to see when they might “bump” into each other again.  But Bingham’s race for those frequent-flyer miles might be in jeopardy.  His company has hired Natalie (Anna Kendrick), who believes the firm can save money by doing the terminations via Internet videoconferencing, so Bingham decides to drag Natalie along so she can see how important the “personal touch” can be.

Writer-director Jason Reitman is the son of Ivan Reitman, the director of “Ghostbusters”.  His first two feature films, “Thank You for Smoking” and “Juno” were critically acclaimed, and his third film “Up in the Air” is likely to receive an Oscar nomination for Best Picture.

Running time 109 minutes, rated R for some language.

“A film that is truly good for the soul!”  -  Rolling Stone

For years, it has been expected that Morgan Freeman would one day portray Nelson Mandela, the charismatic South African leader.  Besides the obvious physical resemblance, the two men are close friends.  Working from the John Carlin book “Playing the Enemy”, director Clint Eastwood has finally brought the two characters together.  “Invictus” is the story of how Mandela, the recently-elected president of a country that had imprisoned him for twenty-seven years, worked to unite his divided country.  White South Africans, guilty of oppressing blacks for years, were fearful of the table being turned, while black South Africans, including many of Mandela’s strongest supporters, looked forward to a time of payback.  To the astonishment of both sides, Mandela established the Truth and Reconciliation Commissions, established a national policy of forgiveness, and seized upon the sport of rugby as a means to bring the country together.  In 1995, South Africa was slated to host the rugby World Cup.  The nearly all-white national team, the Springboks, had a reputation as underachievers.  But the Springboks, championed by Mandela himself, rose to the occasion against the highly-favored New Zealanders.

Many of Eastwood’s films seem about revenge, from his early work with the “Dirty Harry” series to “Mystic River” and even the recent “Gran Torino”, but in his Oscar-winning “Unforgiven” and his Iwo Jima films, he seemed to suggest that while revenge might be necessary, it is regrettable.  With “Invictus”, America’s greatest living film director embraces a man who believed revenge was regrettable and unnecessary.  Watch for a star-turn by Matt Damon (and his absolute mastery of a tricky accent) as the captain of the Springboks.

Running time 130 minutes, rated PG-13.
